About the Speaker: Cherian Verghese, MD, MRCPsych, FCPP
Dr. Cherian Verghese is a physician-investigator, who has dedicated his career to developing new medications to treat neuropsychiatric disorders.
After earning his medical degree in Bombay, India, he completed training in Psychiatry and Neurology, and received Board Certification in India, UK, and USA. He spent the early part of his career at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in academic psychiatry. He completed a Fellowship in Psychopharmacology Research, conducted grant funded research, and had publications in peer-reviewed journals on the neuroendocrinology of polydipsia-hyponatremia in persons with schizophrenia. He served as Inpatient Director and Associate Chair of psychiatry at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
About the Topic:
The prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease is growing, especially in the African American community, where the prevalence is twice that of Caucasians. The personal, social, and health care costs are hard to even contemplate. There are medications in late-phase clinical trials which address the brain changes of Alzheimer’s at multiple stages of the disease and through multiple mechanisms of action. Join us in person at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia or on Zoom for a multidisciplinary discussion on the growing prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease, the community perspective on providing care, and changing perspectives on clinical trial participation.

The Spotlight Series is a new initiative of the Section. It was designed to be nimble and responsive to timely public health issues and concerns in the region. The format includes a smaller audience and fewer speakers than the Public Health Grand Rounds program—in order to not just raise awareness, but more importantly spark discourse and potential action.
