Shaping Philly youth into the healthcare professionals of the future!

The Wohlreich Junior Fellows program is a nine-month after-school program for high-school students interested in science, technology, and medicine.

The College’s more than 1,000 Fellows connect students to every corner of science and medicine in Philadelphia through field trips and mentorship programs. The 500,000 objects held at the Mütter Museum and Historical Medical Library offer unlimited opportunities for students to learn about the histories of science and medicine through hands-on engagement with medical models, instruments, and texts.

Students will receive a stipend for successful completion of each semester.

I think it has given me the utmost confidence as far as what the possibilities of my career goal could be. For that, I’m just forever thankful.

About George and Judy Wohlreich

The program is named after George and Judy Wohlreich. From 2006 to 2021, George M. Wohlreich, MD, MA, DSc (Hon), FCPP, was the President, CEO, and Thomas W. Langfitt Chair of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. During his tenure, Dr. Wohlreich spearheaded the creation of the program, which led the Center for Education to develop its unique educational model.

Program Details

  • Rising 9th through 12th-grade students from the School District of Philadelphia.

  • Students meet with their cohort once per week from September through May. Over the course of the program, students will develop an independent research project under the guidance of an instructor. They will build skills in formulating a research question, identifying and using appropriate research materials, and interpreting their findings. Students will present their research at a celebratory poster presentation in late May.

The program’s academic curriculum includes the following four to six-week blocks:

Science Today: Philosophy, Practice, and Ethics | Anatomy & Physiology | Biotechnology | Forensic Science | Public Health | Climate Change & Sustainability

They’ve given us connections. They bring real people from all over that are specialists. In school you could read about it, they’ll teach you about it, but you don’t actually get that experience.
